Mega Man Incarnate: Mighty No. 9

If you're a fan of the blue bomber, you may know that since 2010, Capcom hasn't done very much with the franchise. Mega Man veteran Keiji Inafune left Capcom and has a new project currently funding on Kickstarter. Update: The project has met its main funding goal in less than 3 days- more goals up ahead!

As the video and the site show, Mighty No. 9 certainly evokes classic character. When I was young, perhaps five or six, I passed my grandfather's room and saw my grandfather and my uncle sitting together before a small television. They were passing a small box back and forth, laughing... I came to know this as the Nintendo, and the game as Mega Man 5. I still have that NES and the game. I am not alone in saying that Mega Man has a very special place in my heart. I don't know if that is enough though...

Though I certainly love the idea of a new Mega Man, I don't know if I could enjoy playing a side-scroller again, even in 3D form. It reminds me of Crash Bandicoot on the PS1... and how I instead opted for the free roaming world of Spyro the Dragon. Today the few platformers I play are either Call of Duty, Battlefield, or GTA. It is strange because I believe I still enjoy adventures like Rachet & Clank or Kingdom Hearts (granted, I haven't played such since PS2).

Though I may not have kept up with the blue bomber much over the years, I did enjoy Mega Man Legends and its squeal, even though I did not complete the games. I did like the Facebook page 100,000 Strong for Bringing Back Mega Man Legends.

Back on subject, I don't know if I will back the project. Though I feel the project is certainly cool, there is only one Mega Man- I do understand that key designers from the franchise are with Mighty No. 9, and that that legitimizes this as a spiritual reincarnation, it is still a copy. It is a b-list remake that can in no way supercede its predecessor, historically or otherwise. Even if this game was a success, our culture is beyond the interest (especially for technological prowess) that granted Mega Man two decades in the lime light. But let's say the crowdsourcing and future sales does jar Capcom into looking at Mega Man again. Where will that leave competing IPs? That would be an interesting dilemma, though it may grant us Mega Man Legends 3.

On the other hand, how often do you get to say you had a hand in something as culturally relevant and socially provocative, in geek-world, as directly participating in the drive to resurrect some semblance of a childhood wonder? There are other cool game initiatives, but probably none as spiritually driven as Mighty No. 9. Those exact sentiments play out in this awesome comic strip. (Credit at7ddak for the highlight)

If Mighty No. 9 were slated for mobile devices, say iOS (because I'm an Apple fanboy), I probably would be even more inclined to back the project or subsequently buy into it.

Also, there are some cool prizes [backer rewards] I feel my mouth already watering over. Did I forget to mention I'm a sucker for swag?

In the spirit of things, here's some cool fanart.
