A year ago now,
news circulated the web of a guy who made a universal toy parts set that allowed parts from different brands to be mixed. I didn't pay much attention to 3D printing before seeing this news. I could guess that a lot of the 3D toy part designs may have come about because of this guys work.
The "Universal Construction Kit" parts are on Thingiverse.
