I love movies, but I haven't been very motivated to see many recently. I'm not a particularly deep person, but I have high standards. I haven't though many recent films are worth experiencing in the theater seat. I just read a CNET article by Tim Hornyak though that compares Pacific Rim to the mid 90s anime series Evangelion.
Though nearly 20 years old, Evangelion still has a significant cult presence - even more so with the 2007-present retelling of the series.
Personally, I didn't particularly like Evangelion. I thought it was too mixed up with religious iconology, idiosyncrasies, and almost impractical meta-like concepts and allusions on psychological and philosophical themes. I found some of the end scenes to be disturbing, especially for an animation. But I appreciate it's contributions to the big robot, post-apocalyptic, and war genres.
In an age where most films, television series, and even anime seem to be spiraling toward the shallow end of storytelling (maybe it's always been that way), Tim Hornyak's comments on Pacific Rim intrigue me enough that I may be interested in that theater seat after all. If I may not enjoy the story, acting, or anything about it at all, it may be worth paying homage to a genre I wish could be revived. Is that a silly notion, or have sillier things happened?
That being said, though I enjoy anime, I don't really go looking for the latest and greatest.
